Press Release -16 09 2001 –

ARAB EUROPEAN LEAGUE: THE ARAB EUROPEAN LEAGUE WILL GO THROUGH WITH PICKET ACTION IN BRUSSELS TO COMEMORATE SABRA SHATILLA VICTIMS DESPITE THREATS, INTIMIDATION AND HARASSMENT.

Since the attacks of the 11th of September in the US, Arabs and Muslims in the western world have been clearly the target of an aggressive campaign of defamation and intimidation. We are now supposed to feel responsible of acts we did not do and we even solemnly condemn. This campaign is being fueled by some segments of the media and public opinion. It has all culminated in denying us of our constitutional rights, and we are expected to bow our heads and consider all this as obvious and justified.

For the last couple of days, militants and sympathizers of the Arab European League have been the target of numerous acts of intimidation and even persecution.

Some were interrogated and had to undergo humiliation and were treated as criminals. Others were told by the police that far-right extremists will be allowed to "smash their heads". All that because we wanted to commemorate peacefully our innocent victims of Sabra and Shatilla 19 years ago, unlawfully killed by Israel and its puppets.

The march that we planed weeks ago, and for which we have already asked permission before the sad events in the united states ever took place, has been forbidden. We have tried to show our goodwill by changing the formula from a march into a picket, and that was rejected as well by the authorities. We have, as a last attempt to find a compromise, tried to rent an indoor space where we can hold our meeting. Unfortunately, all hotel owners and other managers of facilities received instructions not to rent us their accommodations. These instructions are not only illegal but also reflect a clear will from the part of the authorities to deprive us even of our right to private gathering.

All by all, we experience all these measures as dangerous breaches of our constitutional rights and it is our duty as citizens and democrats to reject them.

Therefore we will be holding a picket action on Sunday 16th of September to commemorate our dead in the most dignified manner, even if this will mean that we will be arrested.

These are hard times for many, and definitely for our Arab and Muslim communities in Europe. But this is also the time to assert our claim to our rights and freedoms in this continent. The Arab European League has never been anything but a law obedient organization that acts in a civilized manner. Never had we organized activities that resulted into incidents or riots. We are also a structured organization that undertakes only studied steps. This time is no different, we believe we are totally in our right to express our grief and sorrow in the memory of our victims in Sabra and Shatilla and elsewhere. The fact that other people are morning too is by no mean a reason to deny us of the same right. For all these reasons, the Arab European League will go through with its action on Sunday the 16th and call upon all Arabs and Europeans to join forces with us in our fight for justice and equal rights.
